Flooding concerns rising to new level

NARRAGANSETT — Changes to the National Flood Insurance Program were the major topic of discussion as shoreline residents, officials and other stakeholders gathered as part of a state Coastal Resources Management Council session on the effects of climate change.

The meeting, at the University of Rhode Island’s Bay Campus, dealt with the council’s Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan, which it launched in April.

“It is a critical project to the state,” CRMC Executive Director Grover Fugate said in opening the meeting on Wednesday. “It is a critical project to the council, because we are in times that are changing on us, and the processes that we’re dealing with are changing on us, and we need to understand that and plan for it.”
